Saints Director of Rugby Phil Dowson: ‘Banking Was a Difficult Experience’

This English town may not be the most exotic destination globally, but its squad delivers plenty of thrills and drama.

In a city renowned for shoe production, you could anticipate boot work to be the Northampton's modus operandi. But under the director of rugby Phil Dowson, the squad in the club's hues choose to run with the ball.

Despite playing for a distinctly UK location, they exhibit a style associated with the finest French masters of champagne rugby.

Since Dowson and fellow coach Sam Vesty took over in 2022, the Saints have claimed victory in the domestic league and gone deep in the Champions Cup – beaten by their Gallic opponents in the previous campaign's decider and eliminated by Dublin-based club in a last-four clash earlier.

They lead the league standings after four wins and a draw and visit Bristol on the weekend as the sole undefeated team, seeking a initial success at their opponent's ground since 2021.

It would be natural to think Dowson, who played 262 elite fixtures for multiple clubs altogether, consistently aimed to be a manager.

“As a professional, I hadn't given it much thought,” he states. “Yet as you mature, you understand how much you appreciate the game, and what the everyday life looks like. I had a stint at a banking firm doing work experience. You travel to work a multiple instances, and it was challenging – you grasp what you do and don’t have.”

Talks with club legends culminated in a role at the Saints. Fast-forward eight years and Dowson leads a roster ever more filled with internationals: key individuals lined up for the national side facing the New Zealand two weeks ago.

An emerging talent also had a significant influence from the replacements in the national team's flawless campaign while the number ten, down the line, will inherit the pivotal position.

Is the rise of this remarkable group due to the team's ethos, or is it fortune?

“This is a bit of both,” says Dowson. “My thanks go to Chris Boyd, who thrust them into action, and we had some tough days. But the exposure they had as a unit is certainly one of the causes they are so tight and so gifted.”

Dowson also mentions Jim Mallinder, a former boss at the club's home, as a significant mentor. “I was lucky to be guided by really interesting people,” he says. “He had a major effect on my career, my training methods, how I deal with people.”

Northampton demonstrate attractive the game, which became obvious in the instance of their new signing. The import was a member of the French club beaten in the Champions Cup in the spring when the winger scored a hat-trick. The player admired the style to such an extent to buck the pattern of UK players moving to France.

“A friend phoned me and stated: ‘We know of a fly-half from France who’s looking for a club,’” Dowson recalls. “My response was: ‘We lack the funds for a imported playmaker. Thomas Ramos will have to wait.’
‘He desires experience, for the opportunity to prove his worth,’ my contact informed me. That interested me. We met with Belleau and his English was excellent, he was articulate, he had a witty personality.
“We inquired: ‘What are you seeking from this?’ He said to be guided, to be challenged, to be in a new environment and beyond the domestic competition. I was like: ‘Join us, you’re a great person.’ And he turned out to be. We’re fortunate to have him.”

Dowson says the emerging the flanker brings a specific enthusiasm. Has he encountered an individual like him? “No,” Dowson replies. “Everyone’s unique but he is unusual and remarkable in numerous aspects. He’s unafraid to be authentic.”

The player's breathtaking touchdown against the Irish side last season showcased his exceptional skill, but various his expressive during matches behavior have resulted in claims of arrogance.

“On occasion appears arrogant in his behavior, but he’s far from it,” Dowson asserts. “Furthermore he's being serious the whole time. In terms of strategy he has contributions – he’s a smart player. I believe sometimes it’s shown that he’s merely a joker. But he’s clever and a positive influence within the team.”

Not many directors of rugby would claim to have having a bromance with a colleague, but that is how Dowson describes his relationship with his co-coach.

“We both possess an inquisitiveness regarding various topics,” he notes. “We maintain a literary circle. He desires to explore all aspects, wants to know all there is, aims to encounter different things, and I think I’m the similar.
“We discuss numerous things outside rugby: films, literature, concepts, culture. When we played the Parisian club in the past season, Notre-Dame was being done up, so we had a quick look.”

A further date in the French nation is coming up: The Saints' return with the Prem will be brief because the European tournament kicks in soon. Pau, in the shadow of the Pyrenees, are the initial challenge on the coming weekend before the Pretoria-based club visit the following weekend.
